Formians (sometimes known as ant-centaurs) are an ant-like mortal race noted for their ability to survive in virtually any land-based environment.
Formians resemble giant ants who have humanoid torsos rising from their thoraxes. Their compound eyes have poor eyesight, but that is more than made up for by their antenae's amazing sense of smell. While they are amazing climbers, the body weight of a formian prevents it from clambering vertical surfaces with the same ease as a standard ant. They have two-fingered hands with opposable thumbs.
Formians have an inborn caste system, with queens at the top, followed by soldiers, and finally the workers at the bottom. Workers range from 3 1/2 - 4 1/2 feet tall, have large hands, and possess an intellect comperable to a chimpanzee. Soldiers stand between 6 1/2 - 7 feet tall, have small abdomins, and large mandibles. Queens can vary in size from anywhere between 10 - 20 feet, and have large swollen abdomins as wide around as they stand tall. Male formians are winged and are always worker caste, although they do not participate in building or foraging activities.
A single hive of formians were created from regular ants by Kol'Gar in order to aid in his search of Vion and Vasa. The hive organized a searching party and began to sweep The Woods in the direction urged by their creator.
There is currently a single tribe of formians located in The Woods.
Formians currently live in nomadic tribal hives. They have early stone-aged technology, able to wield objects as bludgeons, and chisel basic tools.
Formian names are hard to pronounce for other mortal races, and often contain clicking sounds. Common names for soldier and worker caste formians include Ryt'thkril, Ngl!chuik, Thrir'Ma!kt, and Krykt. Queens are known by their titles alone.
Only the soldier caste is appropriate for use as a Player Character.
